Mrs. Lena Mae Jones Carter

And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.”

“Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”

Lena Jones Carter was born in Harrison County, Marshall, Texas, November 8, 1925. She joined St. John Baptist Church in Marshall,Texas, at an early age. She was the youngest of five children.  She graduated from Pemberton High School, Marshall, Texas, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Bishop College, Marshall, Texas, in 1948. She continued her studies at Howard University, Washington, D.C.; California State University at Los Angeles, CA; and Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, LA.

The consummate educator taught at Coleman College, Shreveport, LA; Gould High School, Gould Arkansas; and the District of Columbia Public School System, Washington, D.C. She taught at Grambling State University for 35 years. She was one of Wiley College’s most beloved First Ladies, serving from 1993-1997.  She was most proud of the Wiley College Book Club which she developed, chaired and hosted monthly in the president’s home. From Wiley College, she moved to Texas College, serving as the Coordinator of the Testing and Retention Academic Development Center.  She officially retired in 2001. She was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Louisiana Education Association (LEA); Bishop College Alumni Association, and the Grambling University Retired Teachers (GURT). She was a faithful member of Lewis Temple C.M.E. Church, Grambling, LA, and a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

She leaves to cherish her memory, the love of her life of over 60 years, Dr. Lamore Joseph Carter, (whom she met on the campus of then Grambling College), two beautiful daughters, Greta Lisa Carter (Grambling, LA) and Kris-Lana Carter (Arlington, VA), and three grandchildren: Lauryn Imann DuValle, (Arlington, VA), Reginald Lamore Carter DuValle (Indianapolis, IN,) and Morgan-E’Lysse Carter Drain (Los Angeles, CA), a very special niece, O’Neal Cage (Bachelor, LA) and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents Mr. Preston and Mrs. Helen Jones (Marshall, TX), two brothers, Levonia Jones (Los Angeles, CA), Albert Jones (Marshall, TX), two sisters, Erma Jones Anderson (Los Angeles, CA), Lizzie V. Jones Johnson (Clinton, MD) and an infant son, Lamore Carter, II (Grambling, LA).

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made toward the Mrs. Lena  J. Carter Scholarship Fund.  Checks may be made payable to the Grambling University Foundation.

Mrs. Lena Carter, whom I called a Mama Lena, was my advisor in the English department at GSU during the years of 1975-1979 as I majored in English. I truly loved her and know that she will be missed. Rest in Peace, Mama Lena!

May the family rest in His care. God will ease your pain and give you the hope and assurance needed. Mrs. Carter and I were colleagues in the English Dept. at GSU. She was a no nonsense educator well respected by students and faculty. We both belonged to Lewis Temple C.M.E. and both were sisters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She will be missed. God bless the family.
