Ms. Doris was the mother of my best friend, Venida Taylor aka Sugar Bear. Ms. Doris was a second mother to me. Opening up her home and heart to me. She was wonderful at checking on me and checking up on her daughter at the same time. One of the last visits we made was a surprise visit where we drove across country from California to the Taylor's home. We had told Ms. Doris that we would not be able to make it all the way to Summerfield/Bernice this trip. You could hear the disappointment in her voice over the phone. The following night, late and pitch dark we arrive. Ms. Doris, in her house dress greeted us and just about jumped out of her skin with excitement. I recall her trying to hide her tears of joy from me many times that trip. You could tell she was so happy to see her baby girl Venita and her adopted daughter me, Nosh. But she told us in no uncertain terms that next time we had better call and let her know. She mocked that her heart couldn't take surprises like that. Remembering that story makes my heart warm with love. The love that a smile or kind word from Ms. Doris always inspired. I love you much and wish I could be there to help celebrate your awesome life.
